"We must end fuel poverty" - John Leech MP

April 5, 2007 2:11 PM
Older people, pensioners

Many elderly people live in fuel poverty due to the inadequate state pension.

John Leech, MP for Manchester, Withington, is fighting with his Lib Dem colleagues in Parliament to end the situation that sees hundreds of people across south Manchester living in cold and inadequate conditions.

Fuel poverty is the inability to provide adequate heating in the home due to the high price of fuel. It affects many people, especially the vulnerable such as those on low incomes and the elderly.

John Leech MP said: "I've had countless people who have contacted me because they can't afford such a basic thing as home heating. What is even more worrying is that many, many more suffer in silence.

"Nearly 200,000 households are in fuel poverty in the North-West - the highest rate in England. It is shocking that this situation continues in the 21st Century.

"Many people in my constituency use pre-pay meters, which mean that they end up paying as much as £123 more per year than they would normally pay. We need to work with service providers to ensure that everyone is able to provide a warm house for themselves and their families." delight
