John Leech MP after completing the Great Manchester Run for the Breast Cancer Campaign

John Leech has been working to raise awareness of breast cancer.

Manchester MP, John Leech, took part in the fifth annual Great Manchester Run this weekend to raise money for research into breast cancer, finishing the 10km course in just over one hour.

The event attracted an estimated 28,000 people from across Manchester and the North-West. Elite athletes battled it out for the honours while thousands running for charity and for fun made up the rest of the field.

John was approached by the Breast Cancer Campaign to be part of their team following both his local and national campaigning on the subject of breast cancer screening.

Speaking after the event, John said: "The Great Manchester Run has gone from strength to strength over the past years with more people getting involved each year.

"The distance means that anyone can take part, whether they are fitness fanatics or couch potatoes. With obesity on the rise in Britain, events such as this provide great opportunities for people to get out and have a go at challenging themselves.

"Breast cancer is a really important issue for me," John continued. "It's not just about raising money, it's also about raising the profile of the disease. Breast cancer screening rates in south Manchester are some of the worst in the country and we need to get the message out that the earlier its identified, the more likely it is that treatment will be successful."
