Local Liberal Democrats have been working to ensure the continued success and beauty of the Cemetery.

John Leech MP today condemned vandals who have attacked the Southern Cemetery, causing damage to a significant number of headstones.

'I am appalled at the disgusting actions of these vandals,' Withington MP John Leech stated.

'This reckless behaviour will have a long-lasting and distressing impact on the families.

'The damage is also likely to cost a considerable sum to repair.'

The attack comes as a shock to the Friends of Southern Cemetery, a new group consisting of local residents, whose aim is to improve and promote the cemetery

Friends spokesperson, Councillor Norman Lewis, said, 'We will be working closely with the council and police to try to ensure this kind of crime will not happen again.'

Anyone with information about the vandalism should contact Chorlton police station on 0161 856 4783.

If you are a resident of the Manchester, Withington constituency and are writing to discuss any issue that Parliament or government is responsible for, you must provide your home address as MPs are generally only permitted to act on behalf of constituents.

If you are not a constituent, you do not need to provide your address, but the matters we can deal with are more limited and you may wish to contact your local MP in the first instance.
