According to IFAW, the Japanese claim whaling is undertaken for scientific purposes, but few findings are ever presented.
Manchester Withington MP, John Leech, has adopted a humpback whale - named Coda - to show his opposition to Japanese whaling.
The International Fund for Animal Welfare's (IFAW) campaign to highlight the plight of the humpback whale has come to a head as it has been discovered that Japan will target the species in an internationally recognised whale sanctuary.
John Leech MP stated:
'I was delighted to be asked to support IFAW's campaign and to sponsor a whale. Whaling is unnecessary and cruel.
'The humpback whale has been driven to near extinction by commercial whaling during the last century. It is time that anti-whaling nations, such as the UK, exert diplomatic influence on countries such as Japan who continue this brutal practice.'
