Lib Dem MP for Manchester Withington, John Leech, has called on the Labour government to introduce new measures needed to reduce the number of fatal accidents involving heavy goods vehicles.
"13% of all fatal road accidents involve heavy goods vehicles, yet they only account for 5.7% of road traffic. Making retro-reflective markings mandatory on heavy goods vehicles will not only increase road safety but will also reduce fatalities," John Leech stated.
The date set for making the measure mandatory is said to be from 10th October 2009.
The cost of fitting the material to such vehicles is £100, or 0.001% of the total vehicle cost
