Lib Dem MP John Leech has signed a motion calling for the Government to include the replacement of the Trident nuclear weapons system in any forthcoming review of Britain 's defence and security.
The government wants to invest in the Trident submarine design process (Initial Gate). However, the motion, backed strongly by local MP Leech, requests that due to financial constraints on the defence budget, the Government should wait until after the parliamentary recess before concluding the Initial Gate decision.
John Leech has repeatedly called for the Government to scrap plans to invest in the Trident system. He voted against the renewal of Trident in Parliament.
John Leech said:
"The Government must recognise that due to the economic downturn, and the UK 's commitment to victory in Afghanistan , now is not the time to invest heavily in replacing the Trident nuclear weapons system.
Instead, the government should be looking to reduce Britain 's nuclear defence system."
