Last Chance to Save Ewing School

October 21, 2009 5:15 PM

The closure of Ewing School took a step forward today after Labour councillors forced through a motion in support of the closure plans.

There now starts a six week consultation period on the plans before a final decision is made by the Labour-run council. Liberal Democrat councillors and local MP, John Leech, have vowed to continue their opposition to the plans.

John Leech said:

"By blithely backing these proposals Labour councillors have yet again failed to listen to local concerns and have sorely let people down. They've chosen to tow a party line instead of listening to and acting in the best interests of the parents and children."

"Mainstream education does work for many children, but these plans just aren't right for the children of Ewing, Grange and Lancasterian. As soon as theses plans were first mooted I spoke to parents and children and they were extremely concerned about the plans. Since then we've delivered a 10,000 strong petition to Downing Street but still this has been ignored by the Labour councillors."

Councillor Graham Shaw, who is also a governor of Ewing School, added:

"There's no evidence that these changes will offer Ewing's children better education and I hope that local people will use the 6 week consultation period before the final decision is made to register their concerns."
