Lib Dem MP writes to MMU about job cuts

November 20, 2009 2:14 PM

In the wake of Manchester Metropolitan University's (MMU) announcement that it will cut 127 jobs, Withington's MP John Leech has written to the Vice-Chancellor, Professor John Brooks, expressing his concern at this development.

MMU announced on Monday that it would be cutting 127 administration and support jobs, with Professor Brooks citing the recession as the key factor behind this, and the university have subsequently begun to consult the unions in this regard. In response to this, Mr Leech has written to the Vice-Chancellor to express his concern over the impact of these job cuts, and to ask for more details about what effect they will have on the local community.

John Leech said:

"With so many local families hard-pressed in the current recession, I am concerned to hear that Manchester Metropolitan University is now planning to cut jobs. I have written to Professor Brooks to find out more details on why these cuts are taking place and how many local jobs could be potentially affected."

John added:

"I am also worried about the adverse impact these cuts will have not only on those individuals who will lose their jobs, but also the potentially detrimental effects these may have on the quality of student life at the university, as well as on the institution's standing in the local area."
