John Leech MP slams government plans to abandon renewable energy targets

10.50.00am GMT Mon 5th Nov 2007

Liberal Democrat MP for Manchester Withington, John Leech, has slammed the government for making secret plans to do a u-turn on their climate change pledges by abandoning targets for the greater use of renewable energy, such as wind and wave power.

Leaked documents show that Gordon Brown has been advised that the target signed up to this year, for 20% of all European energy to come from renewable sources by 2020, is expensive and should be lowered.

John Leech MP said:

'This shows that the Labour government is not serious about tackling climate change. If we are to make a real impact on the carbon emissions which are causing global warming, then we have to make serious investment in green energy sources right now. Gordon Brown should be ashamed to be making such a U-turn.'
